Mother’s Wound, Lisa Waup

ABOUT THE PIECE

Originally I wanted to create a healing figure- inspired by a magic doll. My inspiration behind ‘Mother’s Wound’ is to detail the deep connections Mother Nature has with our very being. To give her strength, appreciation and protected love is becoming an ever more priority in these uncertain times, and also, to assist in her healing.

This sentiment also extends to mothers and the love they possess for their children which strongly connects them with Mother Nature. With this, we also inherit a mother’s past healings and also traumas that are passed down the matrilineal line. I often ask myself at times what I have subconsciously taught my children to put up with and accept, especially my daughters. The symbology within the mark making on this figure, tells of my children, in both the circular motifs stenciled on the cane toad skin and also, the stitching - reaffirming their connections to me. The linear work details our intertwined lives together in the journey we will take together over our lifetime. The woven ceramic head, strategically placed under the figures head, denotes the innate connection to Country and the physical and spiritual parallel forces within.
