ABOUT THE PIECE
Driza-Toad is a playful monstrosity of a piece interpreting the cane toad into a fashion garment in the context of the “shitshow” that is 2020.
Toads are vermin…. They were introduced into Australia in the 30’s in the hope they would curtail the beetle pests for sugar cane. There was “great expectations” of this beast sorting out this farming problem. Boy oh boy though did this backfire.
Like 2020, we came to this momentous year with “great expectations” & an unreal sense of celebration & excitement. People celebrated on New Year’s like it was 1999. We were finally in the future and it was going to be amazing.
However we couldn’t have been more wrong lol. Catastrophic bushfires, worldwide covid-19 pandemic & pending global recession. That is just in the first 3 months. Personally I’ve also had a nuts whopper of crazy personal things blowing up in my face after having such “great expectations”.
Thus, the Driza-Toad is a spew out, like the toad after it’s been beating with a cricket bat & spews it’s guts out, of all this craziness.
It’s a classic Australiana Driza-bone style. It has the frills & colourful fringing symbolising the “great expectations” and celebration of 2020. The “fuck” cards symbolise a comical shaking up of everyone’s worlds. The Tarot is multifaceted. In short, they represent life’s karmic & spiritual lessons and reflect the trials & tribulations that we experience. It represents the fact that no amount of tarot or spiritual forecasting can predict what is next in this shit show. No amount of tarot or spiritual forecasting can even protect us. However, it does also represent hope for the future of the planet & humankind. A sense that we really need to go within and face the demons that we created in order to transform this horrific situation. This applies both world wide to the current shitshow and the cane toad.
