Desert Pea Throne, Mila Faranov
ABOUT THE PIECE
Upon being given the opportunity to design a piece of furniture incorporating cane toad leather, the idea for the Desert Pea Throne came to me quite immediately. I wanted to create a piece that symbolised something uniquely Australian – in a way to figuratively counterbalance the brutal consequence of the introduction of the Cane Toad to the Australian landscape. I found out that the native Desert Pea, a flower that only blooms in the most arid of places, like the Red Poppy, is a ‘blood flower’ and symbolises mourning amongst some First Nations groups. This information suggested an added reading to my small child’s throne: a flower simultaneously signifying loss and regeneration reimagined as a throne, the seat of which is cane toads, that you can sit on and squash.
